Whitetail Deer Contest Winner
© By Othmar Vohringer
We have a winner of the 2009 Whitetail Deer Contest. The numbers have been entered into a special computer program and after a few seconds this years winner was established.
The contest prize, a double DVD set of Whitetail Revolution donated by Versus Country goes to entry number 01 entered by Vera Ely. Congratulations Vera to a magnificent buck and winning the prize of Whitetail Deer Contest 2009. I also would like to take this opportunity to tank all the hunters that entered the contest. You’re all winners for keeping the hunting heritage alive and taking part in the conservation of our natural recourses.
Here is the winning entry story and picture again.
Vera Ely took this magnificent 8 pointer weighing 200 pounds on November. 22, 2008 at 9:15am.
“I used a Remington model 7,308 caliber, to harvest this trophy at approximately 45 yards. The weather was a cold-frosty 15 degrees. I had always heard about bucks in full rut and I finally got to experience this in Pennington Gap, VA on my Father's farm. I strongly believe in all the no scent tactics especially since I was on the ground. This memory will last a life time.”
Here are the other entries of this contest.

Whitetail Deer Contest: Entry 4

Kevin Devault sent me his contest entry and tells me that he went out bowhunting during a snowstorm, as you can see in the picture, in Wisconsin’s late archery season. The nice eight pointer buck, not the biggest he has seen, is prove that late season still can produce some good buck hunting. The chances are even better when you go hunting during weather like Kevin did, because these are the days most hunters stay home.
Kevin used a Renegade bow with Easton arrows topped Muzzy 125 grain broadheads. Kevin said the snow was coming down so hard that he had to follow the buck immediately after the shot, as the snow would have covered the tracks otherwise.
You can see in the picture how hard the snow came down on that day. Congratulations on a nice Wisconsin archery buck Keving and good luck in the contest.

Bill Brown from Martinsburg, WV sent me the following story and picture to enter in the Whitetail Deer Contest. “Land of Giants” seems appropriate when I look at the picture of his beautiful long timed buck. Congratulations Bill.
The Rut was on… So I decided it was time to hunt in the “Land of the Giants”.
This area was saved for the Rut.
Saturday Nov. 8 - 3 small Bucks on the move but no shooters.
Monday Nov. 10 - 3 more Bucks but no Wall Hangers. Most of the deer were traveling a
trail where I had not cleared a shooting lane. Since it was my first time hunting in this stand I noticed it wouldn’t take much pruning to clear a lane. At lunch I asked my hunting partner to help clear out a lane. His come back was “No time like now”. That evening we choose a different area to hunt. I harvested a mature doe.
Tuesday Nov 11 The Perfect Morning, no wind, frost on the ground and 28 deg. I took a doe at 7:05 I drug her under my stand. No sooner than I got back in my tree stand I saw a nice buck chasing a doe. She came thru the new lane but he lost interested. Then I looked to the left another huge doe was walking broad side. I couldn’t pass her up. I shot her @ 7:40 she crashed within site.
One hour later I was thinking what a good morning Two does. About 15 mins. later another doe came thru the new lane. I thought…. 3 would be a charm. She seemed to be calm I was going to take her. Then 2 more came running. As I set up I hoped for a buck chasing them. There he was. He had a nice rack. He stopped half way in the new lane and turned and looked towards my stand as I let the bolt fly. It looked like a good hit. I was out of bolts so I only waited a short while to look for him. No Blood… No Bolt… for 75 yards. Finally I found a good blood trail. I hung my hat in the tree and left. I went to my truck and field dressed the 2 does. By then it was 11 o’clock. Two of my hunting buddies Dave, Charlie & I went on the search. I located my hat & continued on the blood trail. Charlie was following the blood trail, Dave was circling and I was scouting the woods. I asked Charlie, do we still have blood? As he answered yes I looked about 40 yards away. I said WOW what a HOG!!!! Dave met up with us.
The celebration was on for me. Calling friends & Picture taking this was my second trophy buck this season. It took all 3 of us to get him back to my truck. Field dressed weight was estimated to be 200-220 lbs. 8 points with a 19 inch inside spread. I can’t gun hunt on this property but I will be using my crossbow during gun season.

The deer was taken 11/15/08 on the first morning of rifle season in Nebraska. It was shot with a Savage model 16 300 wsm, Winchester super X 180 grain. The B.C. green score was 221 the official score gross is 215 7/8 and net is 208 3/8, 26 point non-typical.
The deer was on top of a terrace at 160 yds. away with no angel to shot I had to move out of the trees to get a shot on him. He moved towards the fence line and I shot its about 130 yds. away and I thought he jumped the first shot and he turned and ran the bottom side of the terrace so I racked another round into the chamber he was on a dead run at 160 yds away when I shot the second time. He went on his back legs in the air and turned so he was facing the way he just come. The deer went about 30 yds. and dropped to the ground. I had hit him both times.

The winner of the 2008 Big Deer Contest
© By Othmar Vohringer
The Big Deer Contest came to a close yesterday, January 31st, at exactly 12 pm Pacific Time zone. It took the computer only a few seconds to jumble the entry numbers and then spit out the winning number. But before I announce this years winner of the Big Deer Contest I would like to write a few words about the contest.
First of all a big thank you to everybody for entering the contest, each one of the entries was an amazing story and prove that our hunting heritage is well and alive. I am glad that I did not have to choose a winner, it would have been really hard to chose just one among the many inspiring entries. Although this was a contest, there are no losers here. Far from it. You’re all winners. You had experiences that will be edged into your memory forever and you came here to Whitetail Deer Passion and shared that memory with other hunters.
I was surprised to see how many young hunters entered the contest this year and this gives me hope for the future of our hunting heritage. With that many young and dedicated hunters our future is in good hands.
And now without further ado here is the recipient of this years prize, a DVD set of Whitetail Revolution generously donated by Versus Country TV. Congratulation to Robbie from Michigan, entry # 004.
Here for you all to read is his story again. All other entries can be read here.
Once again congratulations Robbie and a huge thank everybody that took part in this contest and congratulations to beautiful bucks you all got last year. My thanks also go to Versus Country for providing the prize for this years contest. I am already looking forward to next years Big Deer Contest.
A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all the readers of Whitetail Deer Passion

It was November 15, 2008, and I was hunting with my Grandpa in Michigan. At 7:45, a buck walked out at 170 yards and I shot him. It looked like a nice buck, only after the shot, I couldn't tell what had happened. I radioed my Dad, and he advised me to wait a while before attempting to track it. At 8:00, I spotted another buck at 155 yards, which was a much bigger deer. I promptly brought up the gun, and shot him. He dropped, and I turned to my Grandpa and said, "He's down, and he's big, let's go get him!" It turns out, that both the deer were 8 points, and I had dropped them both! They were laying not 20 yards away from each other! The bigger buck will score around 120, and the smaller buck is one that I would be thrilled with, but he doesn't look as big next to the big one. So, after an hour of hunting, I have now been promoted/demoted to official deer driver.
I would like to thank my Grandpa, and my Dad for willingly sacrificing most of their hunting time to help a lot of kids (including me) go hunting.
Once again congratulations Robbie and a huge thank everybody that took part in this contest and congratulations to beautiful bucks you all got last year. My thanks also go to Versus Country for providing the prize for this years contest. I am already looking forward to next years Big Deer Contest.

Big Deer Contest Entry #9
Hey, my name is Jonah Horst, I am 13 years old and here’s my story. (This buck was taken with a Weatherby .257 Roberts) (B+C score totaled 131.75")
During the last week of archery season, I made what I thought to be one of the biggest mistakes of my life, but this mistake actually happened to make this years hunting experience even more memorable. During the last week of archery season I decided to go out on a fairly ugly day. When I got in my stand the weather wasn’t terrible, but all of the sudden it started pouring. I was contemplating calling it quits when the rain turned into sleet. I decided to stay out and fight the weather after a nice 6 pointer came trotting past me; I came to full draw, and just couldn’t get a clear shot.
Then I hung around for a while and from that point on I saw nothing. The sun was going down, I was completely soaked, and I was ready to quit. I climbed down my tree stand, and walked out into the alfalfa field below my tree stand. I reached down to pick up my grunt call, and when I lifted my head my body suddenly felt hot when I saw a beautiful eight point buck walking towards me. I quickly scurried behind a bush when it stopped and looked behind himself. I was just shocked, I kept thinking to myself, “all of the times I have been hunting, the one time I get down early, a great buck comes walking towards me, now what are the odds of that”.
When I first caught sight of the rack I noticed its towering tines, it wasn’t very wide, but it sure was tall and heavy, I still remember the picture of the perfectly symmetrical buck walking towards me during the sleet storm. The Buck kept walking towards me until it got about 20 yards away; the buck knew I was there when it got closer. The buck quickly ran away, it was the fastest I have ever seen a whitetail run. I felt terrible after I got home. I kept picturing the deer in my head, and reliving the hunt. I hunted that buck every day that week, and hadn’t seen the slightest trace of the amazing buck.
Now around comes rifle season. Every year I go down to my grandfather’s farm in Fulton County for the first day of rifle season. This year I wasn’t sure if I really had my heart set on hunting in Fulton the first day, I just couldn’t stop thinking about the buck I had seen during archery season. But finally I convinced myself that the eight-point buck had been killed, or I scared it away for good, so I went to my grandfather’s farm for the first day. I had no opportunities at shooter bucks the first or second day down in Fulton County, PA but I wasn’t really upset that I hadn’t killed one yet because I knew it was possible for the big eight point to be alive.
The second week I decided to hunt at my house, where I had first had an encounter with the big buck. The first morning after it got light out, I heard footsteps back in the thicket in front of me; I was hunting with my dad so he told me to get ready. After that the footsteps got close and closer, stopping every one and a while, but eventually I saw a tall rack come over the hill in front of me, it was about 30 yards away, I kept walking, then he saw us, and suddenly stopped. This left me with a shot where the deer was quartering towards me hard. I decided to put the crosshairs right on his shoulder and squeeze, right after my shot I knew I hit the deer, we heard the deer crash, and when we found my deer the first thing I said was, “dad he’s the one.”

Big Deer Contest Entry # 6
It was opening day of Maryland firearms season in Garrett County, a recent storm had left a nice 4-6 inch blanket of snow on the ground with temps in the high 20's and winds very calm. My Summit Viper had been set up the evening prior, which makes it much easier to get in the next morning to climb up.... anyway after arriving to my favorite spot which had produced a nice 9pt for me in archery season earlier in September, climbed up to about 25 feet and got relaxed in my seat....I was prepared to hunt most of the day anyway. Next it was like you see on TV, just sat down, waited about 10mins or so and there he come walking broadside 60yds a monster 8pt unreal! After resting the crosshairs behind the shoulder my 760 Remington Gamemaster in a .270 caliber 130gr-PSP spoke with a roar and the buck dropped in its tracks. I was now a proud owner of a 17" spread 8pt the rack is about 15" high....its definitely a wall hanger for me! Over the years of hunting very few times does this ever happen for me quite this easy, it was like the buck read the script?

Big Deer Contest Entry #005
It was September 13th, less then two weeks until my 18th birthday and the opener of the 2008 Minnesota bow season. I got to my stand, a homemade hang-on, about 5 in the afternoon, whit about 3 hours of light left.
The day was warm, with a slight breeze not just best hunting conditions but I was still pumped since that morning I had watched this place from a distance and had seen a couple of bucks pass by. Two mosquito-filled and a deer-less hour later I was beginning to doubt my stand choice.
However, it soon gets a lot better. I bit after 7, I begin to hear a deer working its way through the swamp, and 15 minutes later a small 8-point steps out. As it is the first day I let him pass, and am I glad I did! Just about as soon as the 8-point left, out steps a wide racked buck, and my heart goes into overdrive.
He stops about 35 yards away and starts sniffing the wind and looking around, several times looking right at me. After what seemed like an eternity, but was only 5 minutes or so, and many prayers later, he finally turns his head away from me, allowing me to draw. My PSE Mach-X, launching a Rage tipped Easton Axis found its mark. An hour later after a short blood trail, I found my trophy.

2008 Big Deer Contest Entry # 003
My name is Jennifer Scarborough, I'm 25 and I began hunting last year with my dad. He has taught me everything so far. I have been very fortunate to have 2 great hunting years. Last year I got my first buck on my first hunt. This year I had to work a little bit at it. I learned how to use a tree climber stand and learned a lot more patience! I hunted quite a bit this year and wanted to get a nice buck. Boy did I get a nice one on Nov. 9, 2008! I was using a 35th anniversary Horton Crossbow with Horton arrows, sitting in a Summit Viper SS tree climber. Most of my gear is Realtree AP HD. It was a chilly clear morning and I saw a few does...then came my buck. I took the best shot I could and got him! He is an 11-point piebald. His gross score is a 158 6/8 with an inside spread of 21 5/8". He was a 200+lb. deer!

2008 Big Deer Contest entry # 002
Friday evening Oct. 31 I managed to run out to my deer stand after working late, at about 5:20 this big buck walked in after making a few grunt calls.
It was about a 25 yards shot and I tracked him for only 70 yards before finding this 9 point big guy!!! I took him to John's Taxidermy in Hastings where he weighed it and measured the rack.
The buck dressed out at 223 lbs., has a 19 3/4" inside spread and green scored aprox. 140. When I got home John called and said the deer was about 9 1/2 years old, (grandpa of the woods)!!! This is my first trophy buck by bow hunting so he's going on the wall.
Thanks for sharing your hunt with our readers and good luck in the contests.

2008 Big Deer Contest entry # 001

“I took this southern Illinois ten pointer with my bow on November 7,2008 at 7:20am, on Shawnee National forest in Pope county, Illinois.
I rattled him in at 6:50 am and took a thirty-yard broadside shot and missed. I grunted and bleated a few more times and he came back to the same spot I had just missed him. The second shot hit its mark and the buck walked about 20 yards laid down and expired.
It is my first big buck with a bow. I scored the buck at 125 gross and 115 net. It was thirty-eight degrees and sunny. I had put out hunters specialties premium doe estrus doe urine and Hunters Specialties mega tarsal buck lure. I took him with a PSE Stinger set at 67 pounds and Beman bowhunter 340 carbon arrows topped with 100 grain Montec broadheads. It was my first time hunting outside of my home state of Georgia. It is a memory that I will cherish forever."
Congratulations to a fine buck Adam and good luck in the contest. Adam is the writer of theDeer Hunting Big Bucks blog.
